The term "Big Data," in recent years, has been used by the news media in reference to the large amounts of data collected from our digital lives and computational advances in using them to improve our lives. We will briefly explore some of the key challenges and ideas in areas such as recommending products (netflix, amazon), identifying spam (yahoo mail, gmail), organizing news articles (google news), and DNA sequence analysis.

About the speakers:

Philip Chan is a faculty member in computer science at Florida Tech. His main research interests are in machine learning and data mining.

Debasis Mitra is a faculty member in computer science at Florida Tech. His main research interests are in medical imaging, bioinformatics, and scientific computing.

Ryan Stansifer is a faculty member in computer science at Florida Tech. His main research interests are in programming languages, especially type theory and functional language. He hopes to strengthen problem solving abilities in his students through intercollegiate programming competitions.
