Casting a Web Over Legacy Data

Brian Richardson, Highlander Technologies, Inc.

Thousands of applications still run using technologies ancient by today's standards. Mountains of data have been archived using systems in which companies have invested millions. The lore suggesting that 75 percent of all business information still resides in mainframe databases might be more fact than fiction. Findings from studies such as those performed by the Gartner Group indicate that 80 percent of all corporate data still live on mainframes. Web-enabling legacy applications extends their lives, while strengthening business ties with users, customers, and business partners.
