Does the abstract intrigue me to read this article?
Are they credible and unbiased?
What sources did the researchers use?
Notes:
When I pick up a research article, I do a few things before I invest my time in reading it.
Look at Spencer and Yates’ article and let’s answer these questions:
Abstract - Save $1million annually. Pretty intriguing! It’s a case study. (or so they say) Maybe you’re interested in not having customers call about the software you develop. This is useful. I’ll read the article.
Who are the researchers? - No credentials offered. Hmmm.
From GEIS? My skepticism meter jumps.. This article was published in a journal for tech writers. It was a special issue devoted to the value added by tech writers. I’m worried about bias. It might be a good article….I’ll have to see.
Sources used: One book!?! That’s all. No research! How could they? Later we’ll discover how much….or how little they used the one book.
BTW - A case study is for what happens at one place….not multiple places.
